MICROCRYSTAL ELECTRON DIFFRACTION (MicroED):DEVELOPMENTS AND APPLICATIONS

Microcrystal electron diffraction (MicroED) is a cryo-electron microscopy technique that is used for high-resolution structure determination from very small microcrystals. High-resolution molecular structure determination is a critical step to understanding and engineering biological, organic, and inorganic material systems. Electron diffraction is able produce diffraction data from crystals that are orders of magnitude smaller than those needed for conventional X-ray crystallographic experiments, which can alleviate structure determination bottlenecks associated with the growth of large crystals. In this presentation, the MicroED technique will be described along with current advancements to the methodology. Additionally, applications of MicroED to samples from diverse fields including structural biology, organic chemistry, and materials science will be presented.
